The steps
- Go to jan.ai and download the Mac or Windows version. Install it like any other app.
- Open the Hub inside Jan and download one of the recommended small models. Jan shows which ones fit your computer.
- Start a new chat. Turn off your wifi once just to see it still works.
How I'd use it
- Use it for anything private: client notes, contracts, health or money details.
- Local models are a bit less clever than the big online ones. Use Jan for private drafts, and the big ones for public stuff.
Good to know
Free and open source (Apache 2.0). Needs 8GB of memory or more; 16GB is better. Models are big downloads (a few GB), so do it on good wifi.
Why I share it
I don't make Jan and nobody pays me to share it. It's just a free tool I think is worth ten minutes of your time. Try it this week and tell me what you used it for first.
